I am very pleased to have been included in a collaboration of printmakers from around the globe, brought together by Team Babel. They are a private working group consisting of four printmakers, based at Ratamo printmaking studio in the city of Jyväskylä, Finland.
In honour of Ratamo’s 10th anniversary in September 2023 Team Babel planned a collaborative artwork based on the painting 'The Great Tower of Babel' (1563) by the well-known Dutch painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Printmakers from Studios all over the world were invited to submit a small image, made using different printmaking methods, the theme of which was a square from the original painting selected by lottery. Each artist was asked to respond to their given square in print. One of the representatives of Leinster Printmaking Studio here in Ireland, I was charged with the theme of a painting of men working on a building, the second image here, which is H12 on the grid on the last image.
Team Babel will mount an exhibition, at Galleria Ratamo in Finland this December. They will display all the original prints submitted plus a reconstruction of Breugel's original panting using the artists' printed submissions.
One set of the project work will be donated for the collection of Jyväskylä Art Museum, Finland and two sets of the project will be stored by Jyväskylä Art Museum to be ready for a possible travelling exhibition in the future.
